Hugh Williams-Preece Biography
Hugh was born in Anglesey in October 1969 - more tiny and premature than should statistically allow him to be here. A born vigour in the veins meant he kicked a little harder, got up and dusted down from the ground and tried again. And again. From the start here is someone who knows and loves physical and mental exertion.
Aged eight, Hugh attended the Dragon School and then went on to Gordonstoun. With an emphasis on "Plus est en vous" (More is in you) the school nurtured individual natural talents giving pupils a belief that anything is possible with the right commitment.
After Hotel school and two years working for an adventure tourism company in Queenstown, New Zealand, Hugh returned to London to work in Corporate Events. Although this took him around the world, he still found time to undertake physical and mental challenges, climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours, known as the "Three Peaks Challenge".
He went onto summit Mont Blanc and then Kilimanjaro - Africa's highest in mountain. After assorted volcano climbs in Argentina, he then ascended Aconcagua, South America's highest mountain.
In 2004, Hugh shocked himself and all who knew him, by successfully completing the trans-Saharan Marathon des Sables, 6 marathons in 7 days; the toughest foot race in the world.
He then went on to build a successful business in event management. His company Dragon Live Events (www.dragon-events.co.uk) specialises in running business conferences, AGM's, financial roadshows and bespoke sporting events.
By August 2009, Hugh was ready for another challenge, perhaps the biggest challenge of his life: aside from now being the father of three children under the age of four!
It was clear that he had the physical aptitude, stamina and mental strength to succeed in endurance challenges. But what next....?
Whilst at his wife's family home in Portugal last summer, he wondered... could he run home - covering 1300+ miles?! That led to the specific challenge of 50 marathons in 50 consecutive days from Lisbon to London.
Hopefully there will be 50 running partners joining Hugh on this mammoth achievement. The charity supporting Hugh's quest is Marie Curie. They provide essential care, support and dignity for terminally ill cancer patients. In raising awareness and monies this one-man's personal challenge is transformed into a more ambitious goal reaching meaningfully into many people's lives. Each of the 50 marathons, on 50 days will be a different journey, a different story, and a unique occasion. For every single energy-sapping footfall each joule will be converted and amplified for positive and reaching effect.
Speaking Engagements
Hugh has broad experience in many situations and business sectors. This expertise is illustrated in the invitations he receives to speak, and in his approach to speaking.
Although each speech is focused on the specific requirements of each individual client, themes often include inspiration and motivation (of yourself and of others), goal setting, assessing risk, planning and "daring to dream". Having run his own company, Hugh is able to link these themes to his audience. His style is friendly, approachable and engaging, "can do" and professional. Hugh is happy to address business audiences, charities and schools, and enjoys sharing his own inspiration with young people and entrepreneurs. A "people person" , Hugh enjoys meeting his guests and taking questions, either in a formal Q&A session after his speech or more informally afterwards.
