How's the team now? Does it feel as though it's all a dream and normal life is resuming as before. Well, it isn't. It's not a dream. It happened and is a huge achievement which will have changed you all. Remember that, in the days ahead as you all move forward, and as you process the arduous weeks in flashes of memory. Margaret and Dick xx

margaret and #dick on 2010-05-04 18:52:24

Congratulations on an astonishing achievement. Now, can you do stand-up in a frock?

Stephen Gale-Batten, Gordonstoun 1969-71 on 2010-04-26 12:23:08

I can't believe you sat on your backside whilst the rest of us ran around London yesterday! I kept wondering if you were going to suddenly appear running the opposite way! Fantastic achievement by the whole team and you really must write a book about it inspire others. It's that gritty determination, relentlessly strict training regime and full-on pig-headed stubbornness that you need to do something like that which will inspire others to achieve their own goals (obviously not everyone is bonkers enough to do what you did!!!). I am in awe and will use your example to spur me on when I hit a bad patch in my marathons. Well done.

susie Hewer on 2010-04-26 09:36:43

Congratulations Hugh (or is that Hugo?!!!) Quite simply an amazing achievement, hope you get to have some time now to put your feet up, and relax with your family. Look forward to catching up sometime in the near future. Love Dix. x

Emma Dixon on 2010-04-25 21:40:59

Just watching the London Marathon which just makes us realise even more what an incredible feat you've achieved. But don't stop. We need a team like you. Think of other things to do, for others too. Let's keep this ball rolling.Please. xxxxx

Wonderful 'finish' blog, Matt. You give a real sense of the occasion. And what an occasion. So glad there will be other blogs, other events, and so on... Much love to you all, Mum and Dick

margaret and dick on 2010-04-23 07:03:24

Now now Matt, you don't need to calm down - sober up maybe! What you've done, Hugh, is unbelievable, but to consume that much Guinness afterwards too? Incredible :-) We're all very, very proud of you, particularly Jo Jo who's managed to acquire a 'Go Hugh' hat and hasn't taken it off yet! (Think she just owes you the 21 pints now?) Anyway, if you'll excuse me I must have an internet shopping spree with Jonny PR's card - he left it behind the bar last night. Hee hee! xxx

Sue, Golden Lion on 2010-04-22 18:09:26

p.s Yacky, I was just wondering when you were going to put your slinky shorts on? I am assuming you car broke down to explain your absence today.

James Preece on 2010-04-20 17:00:43

H, sad as I am to leave a grovelling blog, given that running for 9 miles with you today up and down those wretched hills (what idiot put them there?) nearly wiped me out, I can only marvel and wonder at the fact you ran another 18 (and another bloody 48 marathons before that). Great to catch up with the team, nifty navigating Matt and still waiting for my rub down Samia. As for the unofficial member Georgie, thanks for pouring all the red vino down me last night mate, that really helped today (not). Many congratulations to Guy-you proved it's not just a young man's game, but I hope you can walk again soon. I'm now off to pursue a media career after the performance on radio 2 this morning. If you need me again, contact my agent. In the meantime, just one more (as Fartz used to say in the Ship).

James Preece on 2010-04-20 16:48:43

Geat honour to join your penultimate day in the East Sussex Alps (surprisingly hilly), and a pleasure to meet the team that have made this possible and kept us all entertained with the blogs. And thanks for the Garmin-glitch Hugh that meant I had to join you for the extra 700m! Great day & respectable time. Enjoy NUMBER 50 (!!) and hopefully see you tmrw night. I'll be hobblin' and only done a measly 27(!) miles. Makes me appreciate quite what you have achieved. Right, where's the bar...

Chris S-B on 2010-04-20 16:38:41

It must be so strange to be having to fill in the miles when your heart tells you all you're home. But nearly there now. Nonie told me Hugh was on Chris Evans. That must surely help to reach the charity target. How wonderful that will be.

margaret and dick on 2010-04-20 16:37:32

Great to see you in the village and looking so goooood. We are still collecting at Woodhill, nobody gets out withouht something donated. Can't wait to put up the sheet that says you have completed your 50in50 then we can ask for more!! Bloody well done

jon on 2010-04-20 16:19:05

Well done Hugh. I bet you're looking a bit lighter than Toby Marden. You must be smaller than his arse on its own now.

IAN GUY on 2010-04-20 15:16:15

cant wait to tug you over the finishing line - hope you can keep up with me! woof woof

marathondog on 2010-04-20 15:06:21

Well done! You should be a good bet for the London Marathon on Sunday after all that training. Sorry not to be there tomorrow.

Babette and Iain on 2010-04-20 14:43:32

H you amazing man!!!! By the time you read this you will be 49 down and only the last, emotional London one to go. I can't tell you how proud I feel about all that you have achieved. Thinking back to those drunken conversations about 50 marathons it just didn't seem possible! But of course you have achieved it with ease and with a smile on your face (if you can see it through the beard)!! I managed to get booked on the first flight back from Cape Town tonight so I was going to come straight to Trafalgar Square....but it has just been cancelled. So I definitely won't be there to cheer you on. But please know I will be cheering you on from here! So, so sorry I won't be there. Well done and enjoy the thoroughly deserved party! xxx

I hope it was lovely to have a night at Coggins Mill and to be a celebrity in Mayfield. Only two days left....I can't believe how easy you have made it look!! I am still stuck on a farm in Cape Town with no signs of leaving soon. Just thinking of you and all those marathons makes us feel tired - so we get the same results as Hugh without having to run. Thanks for doing the work for us! Don't forget that many an old crock has broken down on the return run from Brighton. So take it steady and keep on running!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-19 12:55:12

Great to see you all yesterday, fantastic time given the heat....not to mention the small matter of a previous 46 marathons! Mind you, I guess your used to sunnier climates these days! Best of luck on the home straight. We're really grateful for every step you're making. x

Jenni Thompson - MCCC Events Team on 2010-04-19 11:34:28

What a great big show-off! How on earth did you pull that time out of the bag after all those marathons? A super-human performance! I only wish I could run the last one with you but quite frankly it would kill me off so I'll give it a miss. I expect to see you plastered across the papers/TV on Wednesday (did you see the Kent & East Sussex Courier this week? it made me smile as there was a photo of you near to one of some silly middle-aged woman doing her knitting whilst running!!!)

susie Hewer on 2010-04-19 10:33:01

Wendy Carpenter on 2010-04-19 09:52:43

Great to see team 50in50 at Brighton yesterday - excellent VIP Guinness! Hugh - you really do have the knarly, tanned and bearded adventurer look down to a tee - and you seemed rather relaxed after posting a time for a marathon that would have most mortals coughing up their lungs! Matt - I don't agree about the drag queen show at legends - with you boys in your lycra you would have drummed-up support for 50in50 from a whole new kind of fan base! Looking forward to seeing you in London on Wednesday, Cheers, Vincent.

Vincent on 2010-04-19 09:48:35

Mark Hodgson on 2010-04-18 16:51:16

Welcome back to Britain. I think a shave before Mayfield would be a thought - the bairns won't recognise their dad!

Julia Odie on 2010-04-18 16:34:34

Very best wishes, and hoping and prayingb that all goes well on this last lap. Amazing times you are keeping. Looking forward to seeing you again soon in Mayfield - that is if you will still have time for some of us lesser mortals after your great achievemnt!

Stephen Reynolds on 2010-04-18 14:44:27

Have emailed Matt re joining you at some stage on your "last leg"! Hope it feels good to be back on British soil. Keep going hun, only a few more to go!! Emma Jane

Emma Jane Wheatley on 2010-04-18 10:46:37

whatg a fantastic few days we had with you. Even more proud of you having seen what it all entails. Glad you liked our clapping and cheering - the French workers standing leaning on their shovels thought we were mad. Can't wait to have another game of poo-sticks! See you in Hyde Park lol r c and s xxxx

rosey on 2010-04-18 08:59:44

Just to welcome you back home and wish you all the very best in Brighton today!!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-18 07:53:05

Thanks for a great couple of days. Experiencing the shear mental strain of running just one marathon (although a little untrained) really makes me appreciate the difficulty of the whole thing. Watching you fly off the next day while I could scarcely hobble put things in a fresh perspective (the picture shows it all). It was fantastic to discover the style of life you guys have been living the past weeks, I'm sure you'll nail the last four runs (PB tomorrow for sure). See you on Wednesday if Guinness hasn't claimed you.

Charlie on 2010-04-17 22:11:15

Well done Hugh I had faith in you from the beginning and knew you would do it , the days have passed so quickly , maybe not for you ! but you sound as if you have had a few laughs on the way , keep it up you are almost there , Love Wendy xx

Wendy Carpenter on 2010-04-17 21:29:12

4 to go - amazing. Take it easy in the Brighton Marathon and no sub-4hr time! And can you slow down afterwards too; I'll never keep up on Tues.

Chris S-B on 2010-04-17 20:42:34

Don't worry Fatrz I'm drinking her share. Guess what, just been to a lunch where one of the auction bids was a day at the Plas for 2!! Would have bid but blown all my cash sponsoring Pheasant Sandwich.

Johnny Two Guns on 2010-04-17 19:48:02

Kate on 2010-04-17 19:46:24

outrageous. HP I don't have the words. However as a Welsh chuffer you should push on through to Llangefli. .. Little H is really worried about your bottom. ps Bell s off the booze. What should 2 guns do?

What an amazing time at this stage of the game. Not long now, and sunshine on your back for much of it (fingers crossed) Thank heavens you're not flying over the channel. Looking forward to the blog when you have a mo, Matt. Nice photo. The beards are growing on us.

margaret and dick on 2010-04-17 16:24:00

Chatted to Kim via Facebook last night. In case the ransom for marathon dog's toes doesn't work, I am doing a series of cake bakes to bring in some more dosh. (WILD crazy Surrey behaviour.) I've begged and pleaded and am now resorting to fat, flour and eggs. xx

Kate on 2010-04-17 12:30:32

I'm doing the Cholmondeley run tomorrow and I may say that unlike some I have no website, support crew, PR dollies, sponsored shoes or beard. OK, it's only 10k but there's always a chance of being chased by one of Lady C's long horned cattle. Donations to my account at the Cholmondeley Arms gratefully accepted. Keep going H and see you Monday.

James Preece on 2010-04-17 10:18:15

Hugh...finally able to get to the internet to send you a message. Looks like you are still doing a fantastic job and Soph says you are OK. I am stranded in Cape Town due to the volcanic ash...never thought I would be saying that! Anyway am keeping everything crossed that I get home in time to see you on Wednesday. Good luck H, am thinking of you! xxxx

Siany on 2010-04-17 09:29:09

It's a beautiful day here and I hope it's the same with you! What could be nicer than a run in the countryside with the wind in your hair, the sun on your back and a trusty pair of shoes on your feet? Maybe by this stage the novelty has worn off a bit but you are still doing a wonderful job and getting ever closer to your goal!! Just keep on running!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-17 07:44:21

If you add up your online, offline and gift aid donations it comes to £29,946.28 for Marie Curie! Wow!

Julia Odie on 2010-04-16 21:21:35

Attention. If a donation of at least £5 is not paid to Marie Curie from the person reading this message I'm afraid to say that Marathondog will not be running with Hugh on the 21st April. If you have already donated please disregard this ransom demand ( and thank you). However if you haven't donated please be aware that as each day goes by a toe from marathondog will be removed.

Kidnappers on 2010-04-16 21:11:49

Nearly there now - just as well you're not due to fly across the channel or that would be another chapter in the tale! Just one step at a time and you'll be there in no time.

Julia Odie on 2010-04-16 19:41:00

You are amazing H we are all bursting with pride and admiration . Cant wait to see you run through that final bit on Wednesday. Love Emily Farts Maddy and little H x

Diana Boulter on 2010-04-16 14:38:38

Sarah Richardson on 2010-04-16 12:59:28

Thank heavens the weather is fair for you all. I'm surprised you had no offers at the market. A couple of fit blokes should surely have brought in some offers. Ah well. Keep at it. So close now. But be good and do as Samia says.

I will never look at a farmers' market in the same way. Six days and counting... xx

Kate on 2010-04-15 23:08:22

Amazing, absolutely amazing. No, not the fact that you've done 43 marathons in 43 days but that now even my step-father is managing to post on this forum with his tech skills. Steady as she goes for the last week. Best of luck and enjoy it.

S and D on 2010-04-15 20:58:13

I totally agree with Tony. Tomorrow is another day and a morning start will make you feel far more the ticket. And running through Somme country will reinforce your already indomitable courage and endurance, Keep at it, all of you. A wonderful team, a wonderful marathon runner.

margaret and dick on 2010-04-15 19:44:02

A few early miles under your belts tomorrow and your spirits will rise! Not so far for you now on these more northerly roads and maybe it's even getting warmer. Lovely seafood ahead and what about some crepes instead of pasta for a change? You're doing a wonderful job so keep going as youm are!!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-15 19:31:13

Iain on 2010-04-14 13:11:58

Congratulations for coming this far with the end so near in sight. Considering all the injuries you started with, it was always more a question of weather you should take on this challenge at all, rather then how far you’d get with a very slim chance of reaching the finish line at all. What a brilliant example of mind over matter, I have never been so pleased to be proven wrong. All the best for the last few days of your incredible journey from Coretta and the rest of the PhysioEdge team

Coretta Hart on 2010-04-14 10:29:30

Sorry about the northerly wind chaps, it passed by here and we tried to stop it but our break was not high enough//the poles broke/the ropes snapped! Anyway in the end we left it to you - sorry. Despite all this you keep going Hero Hugh to our constant admiration. We know you couldn't do it without support so congratulations to you and your impressive team!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-13 20:00:43

After a disapproving tut from you and all here on the eve of your departure when offered a dirty glass of jug red down the local tasca in Belém (Lisbon), I'm now told you've succumbed ...in Muscadet country of all places! ...lack of stamina is a bit disappointing really

Iain on 2010-04-13 19:36:21

Hugh am just SO impressed, can't believe you are now in single numbers but take it steady we don't want any last leg injuries. Have emailed my contact list with your website - i only mention this because it produced a couple of donations and others might do likewise (sorry you probably all already have but i'm a little slow on bright ideas). take care

Nx on 2010-04-13 17:54:01

can hardly believe that you are now in single figures, and that we will be seeing you in a couple of days, on Thursday - if we find our way!! Gav on 2010-04-13 12:53:36

H - bumped into Jodie Kidd outside our offices yesterday on a photo shoot for Goodwood. She was very sorry not to have been able to join you but has a hip injury and has a doctors off games note (a bit lame I thought). She will be in Chile next week so asked me to give you a snog on her behalf when you cross the line. Sadly she was reluctant to give me a bit of tuition in her technique! But dont worry, will warm the tonsils up at home in preparation..... Keep going Hugh - phenomenal effort from you all.

My neighbour's wife sadly but peacefully died last week whilst in the amazing loving care of our local Marie Curie hospice/nurses. Without people like you raising such crucial funds and awareness for Marie Curie to support people in this way, who knows how hard and miserable her final days could have been... My neighbour asked me to thank you from the bottom of his heart. Good luck with the final few runs!

Sarah Wormwell on 2010-04-11 09:41:23

Tired this morning Hugh ? Aw diddumms. What's wrong with you man ?! Imagine me biting at your ankles if you need to pick up a bit of energy and speed. How can you possibly feel a 'little tired' you've only run 39 and a bit marathons. I don't know, humans these days. No stamina ! Look forward to racing you on the 50th :)

marathondog on 2010-04-11 09:30:51

1000 miles!! It's incredible. And a wonderful day to celebrate - and a good night's sleep. What will you all do with your time?!

In the meantime, the two l.o.m.'s are polishing their running shoes and stretching the lycra ready for next week. xxxxxx

As Director of Sport at the Dragon School, Oxford, and somoneone who finds himself stranded in Southern France because of the rail strike, I can only look upon your feat with amazement at your powers of endurance and jealousy that you are working your way across the country faster on foot than I am by rail. I hope that the 8 young Dragons that join you in Hyde Park on the 21st do themselves justice and keep up with you. All the best for the final push.

Gareth Jones on 2010-04-08 13:10:16

Nothing Disney about it Matt, though you're a natural with the blogs. I've watched the first half of Eddie's challenge and, goodness, it's gritty. He was nearly in tears in the ice bath and his feet were a mess. How are Hugh's holding up? I am part excited/part nervous about logging on every day as I just can't get my head around what Hugh is achieving. He was a hero weeks ago in my book. x

Hey, that should have been right shoulder! You see how difficult this is!!

Tony Pain on 2010-04-07 08:07:51

It's been great to hear of your smooth and rapid progress over the last few days and that you are in such good shape Hugh (even if you do have to put up with Matt alongside you for a few miles). I'm a bit concerned about the navigation now. When all you had to do was keep the sea on you left that was OK, but now that will no longer do. So long as the sun is somewhere on your back or left shoulder at midday, that ought to be about right. Continue the great work.

Tony Pain on 2010-04-07 08:00:02

Still following your progress - this is awesome! Words fail me on your achievement thus far. I want to be in London to cheer you in. Well done, amazing, marvellous and all the other superlatives I can think of.

What an experience! What a man! First I would like to thank team Hugh for letting me join them on this epic adventure. It was an experience I will not forget! Just Imagine how it must feel day in day out to wake up knowing you have to hit the road for yet another marathon whatever the weather or the terrain. The determination and courage (plus a bit of madness thrown in) to do this is huge. This is exactly what he needed on the day I joined Team Hugh (day 28). We set off running in horizontal rain and strong gusts of wind which was not what I was expecting when planning a trip to the South of France! As if the pain of running mile after mile was not bad enough it then started to hail on us! Hugh did not bat an eye lid and just carried on as nothing had happened. He remained totally focused and as always kept on running with a smile on his face. My legs eventually gave way after 16 miles and Hugh put his head down and ran off into the horizon. Team Hugh picked me off the side of the road and did their magic! I was shattered and I could barely move my legs. The next day I was so stiff I couldn't get out of bed! I can't say enough how much admiration I have for what Hugh is doing, it is amazing. Also he would not be where he is today without the sterling support of Mat, Samia & Jonny I know Hugh enjoyed the company so if anyone else wishes to join him on the road just contact Team Hugh. Hugh, The Media Tree team are with you every step of the way and look forward to seeing you on 21st.

Hi Hugh et al, lovely to meet you yesterday. We are still tucked up in bed in Biarritz, preparing for the challenge of carrying the luggage to the car. Buena Suerte!

Sheelagh Robinson on 2010-03-30 07:46:19

Your times are fantasitc Hugh - and the discipline in keeping your last 2 miles as a walk is SO impressive. Go team!

Nonie on 2010-03-30 07:35:11

Go Hughey! Over half way, and still going strong, legendary achievement. Well done! Keep well, keep it up, take care and sending love.

Will Gethin on 2010-03-30 07:27:20

We have been to Spain and to France and can't work out how anyone can run that far. Uncle Matt has a beard and we can't imagine him with a beard either. We think what you are doing is brilliant. When we grow up perhaps we can run as far but I don't think so. I don't think Grandma and Grandpa can either!

Megan and Josie on 2010-03-30 06:51:03

A very large congratulatory slap on the back Hugh. An awsome effort. - you're into France and looking good. After reading more about your superhuman effort I felt that I really shouldn't moan when I twisted a knee today whilst reaching for a fat boy pie at Tesco! Wishing you the best of luck with the long run up through France.

Vincent Farrow on 2010-03-29 23:07:42

Remember mate - pain is just weakness leaving the body! ...... Ohhhh, I deserve a slap! I respect the running, but the camera work is definitely ropey! Keep going son! Charles

Charles Wild on 2010-03-29 21:07:35

London team here , expecting snow ! As far as I can see there are three fit , capable, young-ish men out there who ought to be massaging Samia's back in shifts. That poor girl must be exhausted keeping you lot on the road. Can we have video evidence of Matt and Jonny running please. Do you think if I sneaked over Jamie would notice ? I understand that Marathondog's training schedule is moving along at a cracking pace, she can't wait to join you on the 21st. Enjoy the sunshine. I'm sure Hugh is solar powered !

Kim on 2010-03-29 19:13:19

Otti hurt her toe today - very minor but it may as well have been amputated the fuss that was made. I told her to calm down and think of uncle Hugh and how must his toes feel after all that running. She was pretty unimpressed. Have just popped her to bed and asked whether there was anything she wanted to say if I emailed Daddy and Hugh - she said 'tell him i've hurt my toe'. Made me laugh! Hear this morning was tough so get some rest.

ness on 2010-03-29 18:47:10

Sorry to hear of Samia's lower back injury. Lots of sleep for all of you is a good idea. Ever onwards and the finishing line getting closer.

All the best and keep going! x

Kate and Mabel on 2010-03-29 13:05:07

Well done Hughie but please be careful with Tobs - he tells me he did a whole two miles with you, he must be exhausted and probably has hurty knee. He will have to lean on Tims tripod. lol ness

Not sure what is more astonishing, that a cigar puffing beer swiller is still going strong when most normal people would have been locked up for their own good by now, or that Dad actually seems to have used a computer. As soon as you cross the border into France suggest you have Le Pheasant Sandwich-that'll keep you going. Great blogs Matt.

Diego y Marian From a Movistar Shop on 2010-03-18 22:03:30

Ola Guapo! Glad the drama today wasnt a drama in the end. I'm just astonished at your stamina. I went running for 20 mins yesterday and got shin splints and a torn upper quad muscle and crippling blisters and have coloured plasters all over my legs just like you and my physio told me to just take it easy and have a glass of wine so I did. x

nix on 2010-03-18 19:31:05

I work at the referral centre for MCCC and speak to Patients/Familys daily, knowing that there are people like you out there to help us support these people in their hour of need is a pure inspiration, I did the Race for Life last year after sheading 3 stone and that was a huge achievment for me but you just blow that into insignificance. Keep up the excellant work you have inspired me to keep training and I will be doing the 20mile for MCCC in July again Nothing compared to this mamouth task you are doing. Well Done Again

I'm sad the 'morning vicar' look has gone, but am sure it's much better for you to progress to the lope of the long distance runner. I pass on the news to all friends, and they pass on their awestruck cheers for you. So on behalf of about 100 old ducks and drakes, keep going, we're with you in spirit. Just have to say I am so impressed you are doing so well and with such a positive attitude you will see this through to the end, we from physioedge are following you all the way and wishing you all the best of luck.

Coretta Hart on 2010-03-11 08:13:54

Hugh - I'm absolutely in awe of you. You've come so far since the days when the only marathons we did were drinking ones! Keep your pecker up and may the wind be always at your back. Thinking of you everyday mate.

Marc Buchan on 2010-03-11 06:40:17

Hugh! Dad is running about Mayfield in leggings...what have you done?? x

Phil Hopley on 2010-03-09 22:47:29

Your progress is discussed and dissected in disbelief as we stroll around Battersea Park with Marathondog. Keep up the good work. Don't hit that wall, leap over it.

Debbie Loftus on 2010-03-09 20:59:12

HUGH! hope day six has not dampened your spirits too much :) TBH though would u rather be running 26 miles a day or struggling to wake for your 3pm afternoon lecture :P much love Xx

Benedict Bridge on 2010-03-09 19:37:49

Hugh- watching you every step of the way... and of course, hearing Samia's sideof the story!! Keep it up, and ignore the injuries - we can deal with them afterwards!!

Kate Pain on 2010-03-09 12:59:02

Hey Hugh and team! I'm an old friend of Samia's and have been looking at some of your blogs and watching your progress with great interest, namely because I hear someone has a worse sense of direction than Samia! I'm stoked that you are hitting your targets and making the magic happen- its an amazing thing you're doing. Warmest wishes and above all good luck!!! Sylvia
